Keeping courses short and concise is a great way to improve engagement.

For courses that require more time because of the level of detail or breadth of information to be presented, is it always preferable to break one long course into several segments or modules? I can see a couple of ways to do this: 1) use "chapters" in the course to segment it so the user can choose a spot to stop and come back, or 2) create distinct modules with a definite stop at 5-10 minutes so the user must launch the next module to proceed. Is one method preferred over the other?

Hi Peter - Thanks for responding to my post :). What a difficult question to answer. Ha! To be honest, I think either way works and it really depends on the course. An interactive course that is long but engaging should not be an issue for learners to complete.

Hi Jeff! We're running an experiment on this soon, so maybe we'll get some more information. I was asked to set up an introductory course series for our Geberit brand. Our region managers were concerned that the proposed courses were too long. (They're 30 minutes or so, boiled down from one-hour webinars originally, so much shorter than they used to be.) I set up a menu structure with definite breaks between sections, as shown:

My hope is that learners will realize they can do a couple of sections, then stop and come back later if necessary. I'm with you, though, and I don't think half-an-hour is too much to ask, especially for someone who's new to the topic and really needs to pick up the basics. We'll see what happens…

Jeff Grillo does your timeline include the assessment?

@... - Yes, the 5-10 minutes for a course includes the assessment as 3-5 questions should only take about a minute or so to answer.

Peter Christofferson - we appreciate your comments. Please keep them coming :)
